OUR ORIGINS

Our origins are very humble: in our first year, we valiantly engaged but lost to our first opponents, undaunted by the fact that we had only 3 experienced players, 10 rookies and 2 spectators among our ranks. Since then, the Jersey Devils have become a breeding ground for world class players, among them: American Eagles Lance Manga, Tony Flay, Marty O'Conner, Maccabiah Games Gold and Silver Medalist Bill Shapiro, ERU Territorial Representatives Jack Dyer, Jeff Allen, Terry Wallace, Tony DeRemer, Howie Kim, Scott Palena, Alan Davies and Michael Hunt. Dozens of our members have played for the Union Select Side, while other Devils have joined the ranks of Referees: Terry Haas, Gerry McDonnell, Lew Yoka, Allan Moore, John Sharp, Pat Martin, Richard Cobb and Pete Hesler.    In 1982, we became the first club in the Eastern United Sates to build our own regulation size rugby pitch. South Jersey tours have taken the Devils on visits to: England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Canada, Jamaica. and the Bahamas. The Devils stateside tours have included: Churchill Downs, KY, New Orleans, La, Worcester, MA, Richmond, VA, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Charlotte, NC and Lake Placid, NY.    Over the years players from all over the world have been our welcomed guests, and we have hosted teams from Gravesend, London, Bristol, Bath, Stroud, Basingstoke and Newbury, England, Bargoed, Newport and New Tredegar, Wales and South Africa among them.
