FALL 2005
OLDE GUARDE TOUR SET ---- Get out your French translation books! The Olde Guarde is scheduling a tour to MONTREAL, CANADA, with the club side, in May of 2006. Specifically the dates are May 12 – 15. More specific cost, accommodation, and travel information will be forthcoming. BUT BLOCK OUT THOSE DATES.
ANNUAL BANQUET DATE SET -- The date is Saturday Feb. 25th at the Dark Horse Pub in Philadelphia. As is the custom the WALL OF FAME induction ceremony will be taking place. The name of that person or persons is not yet known, but as soon as we find out it will be posted to the web site. In addition various club side awards will be made. This is a class event every year and this year should be no exception. Reservation forms will be available shortly. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.
HAVE YOU MADE YOUR 2005 CONTRIBUTION YET? -- If you haven’t let me give you a couple of good reasons to get it in. As you may know the South Jersey Olde Guarde is a fully recognized charity under the federal rules 501C3. This means that you are able to deduct any monies you contribute to the Olde Guarde from your taxes. In addition your money is put to very specific uses as defined in our charter. Examples of which are :
High School Scholarship Fund -- $500 given annually to a male and female high school rugby player. This scholarship is given to each player for four years. The key stipulation is that they remain in college and play college rugby. That means that your Olde Guarde fund is paying out a maximum of $8000 per year, when the program enters it’s fourth year.
National Transplant Fund – An annual donation is given to this fund in recognition of our former player Bill Regotti who sadly required a heart transplant.
Boys and Girls High School Rugby Program – We financially support the South Jersey High school program in many different ways.
Haddonfield Midget Football – We are a financial supporter of this community program.
Cerebral Palsy Center of Salem and Gloucester Counties – This is one of the main charities that we have supported for many years beginning with the initial golf tournament.
These are just a few of the worthwhile programs that your dues and various events we stage during the year support. There are more and we are constantly looking at new programs.
SO HELP US WITH YOUR $100 CONTRIBUTION FOR 2005. IT’S TAX DEDUCTIBLE AND SERVES A GREAT PURPOSE.
SOUTH JERSEY THE OLDEST CONTINUING RUGBY CLUB – Did you know that SJRFC is now the oldest continuous single rugby club in the Eastern Penn Rugby Union? When you consider mergers and clubs going defunct the single remaining oldest club is SJRFC, founded 1969.
THE 2005 GOLF TOURNMENT – Was held in June at Indian Spring Golf Club. For the first time in recent memory the weather was perfect! 130 golfers teed off and had a great time. The food at the banquet was superb and a beverage or two was had by all. When the dust cleared John Jester was the captain of the winning team with a score of 15 under par. Where the hell do they find these guys? There was a huge 50/50 drawing and a rugby player did not win it. Bottom line is it was a great money maker for the Olde Guarde, yet everyone left with a prize of some sort. So good golf, good weather, good food, great prizes, cold beer. The only thing missing was YOU! Be there next year date JUNE 16th
DON’T GET KNEED BY – Bob Caruso, original first year player (1969), who just got two new knees in November. Rumor has it that he is now ready to come back and compete for an A side position.
DON’T GET LOST – Looking for Mike Hunt at his home in Cinnaminson. He doesn’t live there anymore! He’s leading the good life in Egg Harbour Township, down by the Jersey shore.
LOOK OUT FOR -- These future events:
Bowling night – sometime this spring TBA
Beef and Beer - possibly scheduled for 4/1/2006 in Cinnaminson
First Practice – 2/14/2006.
Coach Shapiro says it will be warm.
First Game – St. Pattys Tournment in NYC. Can you say green beer?
Olde Guarde game – Brandywine T.B.A. tour tuneup.
CHEERS!
