South Jersey Devils v Lancaster

Date:29 October 05
Location: Lancaster, PA
Score: SJ-72, Media-17

Lancaster, PA  The SJRFC Devils were blown out by Lancaster RFC in a humbling 72-17 loss.  This sinks the Devils to 2-3-1 in MARFU DII North and ends any playoff hopes for 2005. The Devils are now 5-4-1 for the Fall season, with two very tough games ahead. The B-Side was dropped to 4-2 in the MARFU B Division, 4-3 overall, losing 42-5.

 First Game:

 1st Half

Like top tier D-II Media last week, National quarter-finalists Lancaster RFC doesn’t really do anything fancy, they just dominate and limit mistakes. They have big, hard, fit, talented players at key positions, play a disciplined style, execute on all phases, stick to their patterns, and have great team speed. They always make you pay with points (usually trys between the posts) if you make mistake.  Right now, the Devils just aren’t at this level of play. The only bright spot in the first half was a Brent DiRomualdo interception between the centers that he took in untouched from 30 yards out.  Half time score: Lancaster 50-SJRFC 7

2nd Half

The Devils showed true character and pride in the second half by not throwing in the towel and playing hard.  At 44 minutes, reserve hooker “Rock” started things off by disrupting a ruck. This play initated a Devils steal that started a break up the blind side.  Sam Mulhall followed it up and fought his way over the try line in the corner; The conversion attempt was wide.  Unfortunately, Lancaster answered with four unanswered trys, two converted.  At 78 minutes, Sam Mulhall broke through and outran the whole Lancaster team for the beautiful 60 yard try that was definitely the try of the year.  Final Score: SJRFC 17-Lancaster RFC 72.

Second Game:

The highlight of the B-Game was the effort put in by the Devils in the last ten minutes that resulted in a Burger Brotz’s try.  Other than that, it was all Lancaster. Stephan “Alby”Seldenbach  played exceptionally well and will definitely by wearing an A-Side shirt for the rest of the year.  Rookie winger Phil Jaques was very impressive with several big runs on the wing.  Final Score Lancaster 42-SJRFC 5
